The Power of Your Thumb
By: Calvin Nowell
I know it's another year and another resolution. For some people, they are making an attempt to stay away from social media for the next 21-30 days or more. Why? Either we are on it too much, or we are tired of everyone's unsolicited opinion. I definitely know I am. Lastly, we want to be able to focus better on our businesses as well as our personal life. However, I want to challenge you to a new of thinking this 2017.
Take a moment and look at your thumb. It's amazing how much we use it in our social media driven world. We use it to text. Switch our menu screen on our smartphone. It's a pretty important finger in this mobile savvy world. Also the thumb has many cultural interpretations. In our culture we use "thumbs up" to express affirmation or "thumbs down" to express disappointment. However I want you to look at a new way of seeing our thumb as a super power.
When it comes to social media, I used to browse everything and everyone's page, but I didn't feel like commenting or liking a photo because I just wasn't trying to be so into the latest social media craze. One day long ago, I remember hearing Oprah say that at the end of the day, everyone is looking for validation and it doesn't matter who it is. At the end of the day, we all want to know does any body "see" me or recognize my value? I remember that statement ringing true within my heart for many years and now I really believe it for everyone I am connected to. Therefore, I decided to put it use.
In 2016, I got so tired of hearing about problems that I decided to be a solution with my life and business. We definitely could use a few more solutions in this existing culture. Immediately, I became intentional about liking and comment on my friends and colleagues posts. Believe it or not, it had a unique way of engaging our relationship. I started to notice some really valued my affirmation because they felt I was into their world, product, or service. On a business level, I started to receive more followers and my posts had more interactions all because I decided to use my thumb for positive affirmations.
As you begin to map out strategies for your business in 2017, look and see how much you can engage your consumers/people all from the power of your thumb. That's right, it's a great start to being seen, heard, and valued. So this year, make sure you text affirmations to your co-workers, customers, etc. Like a few more posts this year and tell them how you feel. (Keep it positive. Your thumb can also be used to tear people down and nobody has time for that in 2017.)
Remember your goal with marketing is to get someone to try your product. Sometimes the people that like my posts, get a quicker phone call back, an invitation to a special event, or even free help because I subliminally feel like they truly support me. So go ahead and use your thumb to like this post and share with everyone you know. 🙂 👍🏾👍🏾
P.S. I used both of my tired thumbs to write this blog on my phone while flying on a plane.
